trick or treatChildren can wear their costumes to school on Halloween, but with the following guidelines:

-Please note that costumes should be school appropriate and masks and weapons should be left at home.

-Please check with your child’s teacher for details about any Hallowe’en Activities happening in classrooms.  If you are sending treats for your child’s class please know that we are an ALLERGY AWARE school and district.  Please DO NOT send any treats that contain peanuts or other nuts.

-Be aware that children will be in their costumes all day, so they should still be able to go outside for recess. If their costume is too fragile to wear all day and in the playground, please consider sending them in a different, more simple costume that can handle time outside in the playground and in the rain. Please also consider that if they have PE that day, they should aware a very simple costume that they can play in.

Reminder that some student consent forms have not been completed.  Please go to the online consent portal using the email we use to send you school messages.  https://consent.sd62.bc.ca.  It is crucial that consents are given by parents or students will not be able to participate in school activities such as walking fieldtrips to Royal Roads property, computer class time and other planned activities.

happy fall

Looks like fall has finally hit!  Just a reminder that the children will be outside playing in most types of weather, as long as it is safe.  When it’s raining or snowing, please send your child to school in a weather-proof coat and shoes or boots.

Thank you to all families that have taken the time to complete the online consents for your students. We are almost there but have a ways to go until we have all students in the school with approval.

It is crucial that consents are given by parents or students will not be able to participate in school activities such as walking fieldtrips to Royal Roads property, computer class time and other planned activities. If you are having difficulty completing this online please do not contact the teacher but rather contact the office. The office is happy to help as it may be an I.T. problem that needs to be directed to the School Board Office.

This is a quick online activity that requires a few minutes of your time. We appreciate all that you do as busy parents.

Please go to the online consent portal using the email we use to send you school messages.  https://consent.sd62.bc.ca

Please be aware, there are staff and students in our district who have life-threatening allergies (anaphylaxis) to different allergens.

It is expected that school district staff, parents, and students will take responsibilities and practical steps to establish an “allergy aware” environment which minimizes the risk of potential anaphylaxis.  Please support our efforts to make this district as safe as possible.

Just a few housekeeping items:

  • We’ve had great weather so far, but it will be changing eventually.  Here at John Stubbs, we believe children need to be able to play outside in the fresh air, no matter the weather (but NOT in terrible storms or torrential rain, of course!).  When it’s raining or snowing, please send your child to school in a weather-proof coat and shoes or boots. They will be playing outside as much as possible because they need it!
  • After school arrangements should be made prior to the start of school, not during school hours.  We understand that situations arise during the day where you will need to get a message to your student.  We ask that you please try to contact our office before 2pm so that we have ample time to contact the teacher and relay the message.
  • If you need to sign your child out before dismissal, please come in to the office to sign them out.  It is important that we follow district procedure with sign outs so that we know where your child is in case of an emergency.  It is not necessary that you call the office to let us know you will be picking them up.  You can either write a note in your child’s agenda so the teacher knows to have them at the office at a certain time, or we will call your child down when you come to sign them out.

Indigo’s Adopt a School program is up and running. Please visit https://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/1538 to make a donation, submit a story or vote for your favourite story.

If everyone votes for the following story, https://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/stories/view/3395#.WcvoCzw2kJU posted by a John Stubbs parent, we have a very good chance of winning hundreds of dollars worth of books for the school.  This program runs until Oct. 8th.

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Meet the Teacher night is Thursday September 21st.  Join us for a corn roast sponsored by our PAC from 5:30p.m.-6:00.m. Meet the teachers in their classrooms, anytime between 6:00p.m.-6:30p.m. At 6:30p.m. meet in the  Middle School gym for a short hello from Sandra Szalipszki (Principal) and Jennifer Gibson (Vice Principal). We look forward to seeing you!

Ocros countryur district is rapidly growing and there is concern for the safety of our runners at the cross country races at Juan de Fuca. To accommodate the growing numbers, cross country will now include students from Grades 2-5. At John Stubbs, we invite any Grade 1 students interested in running to attend practices and train with the team, but not attend the races.

Elementary Cross Country will have a sign up meeting today, Friday, September 15, at first recess in the elementary gym, for all students in grades 2-5 who are interested in joining the team.  If your child isn’t able to attend the sign up then they must go to the first practice at first recess on Tuesday, September 19th.  If they don’t attend either of those times they will not be able to be on the cross country team.

Practices are at first recess, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, on the top field.  Race days will be Wednesday, September 27th and Wednesday, October 4th, at the bottom field at JDF.  Permission forms will be going home on Tuesday.
